Hello, hearties! With the summer sun blazing, who’s ready to swap the heat for a warm, cinematic Christmas hug? Brian Bird, the mastermind behind When Calls the Heart (season 13 is nearly here!), has gifted us a new film to cosy up with: A Little Women’s Christmas, showing in cinemas across Australia and New Zealand from 4 December.
Brian’s stories are like a warm fire on a cold night. Earlier this week, he told Steph at 96Five that he always loves to “smuggle in the good stuff”, hope, faith, love, and redemption, into every tale he tells. Having one foot in media and the other in the church pew, this is how he feeds the soul through film. He’s not chasing flashy awards but the “trophies of people’s hearts and minds,” as he shared with Susie on Juice 107.3 Gold Coast.
Instead of retreading the classic Little Women adaptations, Brian and his son Taylor turned screenwriter Dion Shehan's movie script into a contemporary sequel set in the charming town of Alcott Grove, Tennessee. Jo March, now a children’s author battling a creative block, returns home for Christmas, unknowingly under the watchful eye of her dashing editor. And yes, there’s romance, laughs, and some heartfelt moments in between. The cast includes Trevor Donovan, Jillian Murray, and the legendary Gladys Knight... whose original Christmas song brings extra magic to a midnight candlelight service.
Talking with Aaron and Chloe on RHEMA Newcastle, Brian revealed his simple yet powerful checklist for stories: “a good cry, plenty of laughs, and a romance potent enough to make even men swoon.” That’s exactly the kind of heartwarming blend A Little Women’s Christmas delivers.
Watch the clips at the end of this post to hear more from Brian Bird.
Brian also shared a personal memory with Steph on 96Five, how his grandfather humming Christmas carols while shaving, showing him that “every day is Christmas” if you believe in the miracle of the manger. This film wraps that feeling of daily hope and love in a gorgeous bow.
So, why not make A Little Women’s Christmas a festive must-watch? It’s perfect for gathering “your tribe”, mum, sisters, daughters, or friends who feel like family, for laughter, romance, and those tender moments that touch the heart.
This beautiful film is in cinemas across Australia and New Zealand from 4 December. Go on, have a cuppa, settle in, and let Brian Bird’s reminder of hope, family, and second chances warm your Christmas season.
